This piece is part of the ‘Fragile Entomology’ series, which is an attempt to recreate the seemingly fragile yet naturally strong forms of the insect world whilst combining the man-made material of glass with the natural cotton paper. It also references the intrusions into the hive environment from man as well as the threat of parasites and disease.

Process & Production

Images show the completed glass and paper sculpture along with details of the grey and black glass powder honeycomb structure. The cast cotton paper was also tinted with black ink. A plaster mold was used to pack the cotton linters paper pulp into, to create the 3D form of the hive frame.
