Karen Marie Hasling

I’m a design researcher within material, design and sustainability. I particularly find bridging material understandings and applications across disciplines and knowledge fields interesting. I was originally trained within textiles technology, but consider all materials relevant in my research practice.

Artist statement

For my entire work life, my interest has been bridging material understandings across disciplines and knowledge fields.
This interest was sparked when as a postgraduate student, I was introduced to fibre composites. Coming from textiles technology and engineering design, I was specifically interested in the visual and aesthetic perspectives of a (material) construction that is otherwise predominantly considered for technical and functional reasons.

Nowadays, as a design researcher, I unfortunately rarely find time for material explorations myself and the domain(s) I navigate within have expanded to also include ‘sustainability’ and ‘education’. Based on this, I predominantly focus on facilitating and supervising students’ and based on that propose logics, methods, tools within these.

‘My’ entries in the CH material library showcase samples from early days in design research predominantly exploring the potentials of ‘visual fibre composites’.
