Gry Ringset

I approach the nature closely through conceptual frameworks, materials and material expressions. I bring with me parts of our time's problem areas between man and nature. I want the sensuous aesthetic dimension to be a meaningful experience in the meeting between man and work.

Q&A

What craft do you work with?

I work as an experimental artist, educated as a ceramist and love to experiment with the material and material composite with fibers and porcelain.

This technique gives me artistic and technical freedom with a material where I can play with collage techniques with elements from fired fiber porcelain together with raw pieces of fiberclay and other materials.

What inspires you to work with this craft?

I have three main sources for inspiration; rare objects from history, microperspective in the nature and sometimes art exhibitions.

I always start working with developing ideas. Some ideas just get in my mind, others will develope over time or spring out from other projects. I have always several projects and themes going on at the same time. This gives me playful moments when I switch and have breaks from each project.

How do you start your creative process?

It’s always a long process from an idea to the final decision to start the working in the material. The meeting between reality and the idea gives me new input and will continue the dialog between myself, the material and the idea. I always enjoy the process itself. The techniques developed together with my art projects. The idea is decisive for how I choose to go in and solve the project practically. I have always an open mind.

How would you best describe your workspace and what tools could you not do without?

My workspace has to be in an order that inspires me to work. It needs items from experiments or nature, sketches and text. My internal dialog with myself happens through a verbal and visual dialog. The needs of tools depends on which project I’m working on.

Are there new techniques you would like to try?

In general, I like to work towards art exhibitions. At the moment I have resumed my research work in material develpoements where I explore the possibilities of expressions with plant fibers and porcelain.
